hilarious english

Since Phil and I have been in Prague we have heard some diamond English being spoken, as well as fantastic written English. I thought that I would start to compile a list of funny things that we have heard and seen. Please bear in mind that I am not at all laughing at particular people, cultures or even level of English… As a person who can only speak broken Afrikaans and French (at a push) I am in serious awe of people who can hold a conversation in a language that is not their mother tongue. English is a weird and wonderful language though, so I hope that you can enjoy the humour of this page.

1. This morning I was editing an article from a Christian lady involved in women’s ministry. She had participated in a conference in Poland called “Let’s Stimulate One Another to Love”. Oh yes..! Makes you wonder what these Christian women are getting up to..!!

2. After complaining about a dirty kitchen applicance (the cooker) in an email, one of our students said “As for now I can only say that Annie washed the cocker yesterday and it looks much better.”

3.  Just in case you’re not sure what to do with “Toaletni papir”..!

4. Food translations at pretty special here too… a few for starters:

- Lívance se šlehačkou a skořicovým cukrem = Doughnuts with weep cream and cinnamon sugar

- Křehký koláč s jablky a hruškami = cracky apple and pear cake (hmmm cracky apple..!)

- Babiččina žemlovka se zapečeným bezé = Grandmothers’ brown betty with meringue
5. We are now enjoying the great range of baby-care products that you can buy here… I think that I’m going to buy some of this stuff just because I know how much it will make my brother laugh..!
